HAPPY VESAK 2011(B.E. 2555)
The
word Vesak comes from the name of the Visakha month, the lunar month in the Buddhist culture
that is between the months of April and May. Vesak
Day is at times erroneously translated as the Birthday of Lord Buddha. This
is incorrect as Vesak Day commemorates three
important occasions all of which happened on the full-moon day in the month
of Visakha (in different years). Thus, it is also
termed as a Thrice Sacred Day, and the three important events are:
(1) Birth - Bodhisatta
Siddhattha Gotama was
born on the full-moon day in the month of Visakha,
year 623 B.C.
(2) Enlightenment - Bodhisatta Siddhattha Gotama gained Enlightenment on the full-moon day in the
month of Visakha, year 588 B.C. (at age of 35)
(3) Buddha Gotama
passed away to Nibbana on the full-moon day in
the month of Visakha, year 543 B.C. (at age of
80)
